GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION
- A GI product is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicraft and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory.
- Darjeeling Tea, Tirupati Laddu, Kangra Paintings, Nagpur Orange and Kashmir Pashmina are among the registered GIs in India.
- It ensures exclusivity.
- It is covered as the element of intellectual property rights (IPRs) under the Paris Convention for Protection of Industrial Property.
- GI is governed by WTO’s Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS).
- GI tag in India is governed by Geographical Indications of Goods Registration and Protection Act), 1999.
- This Act is administered by Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks.
